![]() If you know what the checksum of the original file is supposed to be, you can run the hashing algorithm on the downloaded file to make sure the two values match. How checksums keep you safeĬhecksums let you verify the integrity of downloaded files. If you change one little thing about that file, and run it through the hashing algorithm again, you get a totally different value. For this reason, if you compare two checksum values, you can tell whether or not they were derived from the same file. If you put a file through a hashing algorithm, you get a unique value. ![]() Here’s the main thing to remember about checksums: They act like a “fingerprint” for a file. The letters are only there because they’re numbers expressed in a non-decimal numeral system (the one above is hexadecimal). These checksum values look like a big string of letters and numbers, for example: 11a0241a5a7accb9e599eeff04e739479049d75669067980401451f3fde72b96īut they’re actually just really huge numbers. For our purposes, we’re going to simplify things and only talk about checksums generated by cryptographic hashing algorithms. A checksum is the value you get when you run a file’s bits and bytes through a special algorithm designed to produce - you guessed it - checksums. What is a checksum?įirst, what is a checksum? Dr.Tsang was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her response was a smile and a simple, “It felt like flying.” I guess I deserved that… I did ask her what it felt like when she was in the air and if it was the adrenaline rush that fueled her. After discussing some of her more harrowing adventures, I was concerned about her daredevil tactics. Sky’s evaluation of risks seems to be tempered by her confidence and experience. Respect for others, whether it’s their way of life or their right to life is essential to her principles. What “gets under her skin” as Sky puts it is lack of respect. That’s not to say she doesn’t lose her temper. I can appreciate the analogy, listen first then find a solution. She describes the world and the human body as an engine. She seeks balance in everything she does. Overall, Sky has an emotional awareness that’s born from understanding and acceptance. The knowledge passed down is not solely a history but a heritage to be practiced and preserved as a way of life. The Nakoda community had as big an influence on and hand in raising Sky as her parents. Family is clearly important to Sky, and that goes beyond immediate blood ties. Given her background I feel that Frost and Sky would have much to bond over. I wonder if that encounter inspired Nomad to welcome the friendship of a hunter like Specialist Frost. Had it not been for Sky’s medical training Nomad may not have survived the incident in the North. ![]() I was, however, surprised that this was the first I have heard of her. She seems to have the necessary drive, training and temperament to meld with Nomad’s team. Sky is an accomplished medical officer, aviation mechanic and pilot. When Nomad first brought Specialist Mina “Thunderbird” Sky to our attention I wasn’t surprised by her recommendation. She completed her Basic Medical Training (CFHSTC) and continued to serve in the CAF as an Aerial Medic. ![]() Remembering her mother’s emphasis on the value of balance, Thunderbird felt since the CAF taught her to take lives, she should also learn how to save them. Her first introduction to engines was at her father’s knee, he taught her to understand helicopters before she learned to fly one.Īlways eager for new experiences she enrolled in the Bold Eagle Program at seventeen where she excelled in basic military training. “Air or ground, you find your balance or end up with a face full of dirt.”īorn in the Nakoda Territories of Saskatchewan, Thunderbird’s first lesson from her mother was the importance of community. ![]() ![]() Blueprints for arm attachments like the drill arm can only be found in wrecks scattered throughout the map. It is also highly recommended to have a fully-charged seaglide for quick transport. Even if the player is wearing a reinforced dive suit, the damage received will be extensive. Students, faculty, and campus budget officers raised concerns about the institution’s plan to rely on and invest so heavily in such an unreliable climate tool. But reaching that goal would have also required significant purchases of offsets through carbon markets. In 2013, the University of California pledged to achieve carbon neutrality across its campuses and health centers within 12 years by shifting to emissions-free vehicles, building renewables projects, and undertaking similar efforts. If you can’t create your own, scrutinize the options in the marketplace very carefully and commit to only buy trustworthy ones.īut that third option “is a hard path to take,” she says, “just because of the poor quality on the market today.” If you must use offsets, create your own. Haya, who has highlighted issues with offsets for two decades, says she sees three main takeaways from the research project, which she lists in order of priority: Don’t buy carbon offsets focus on cutting emissions instead. Indeed, the subject will be a hot point of debate at the COP28 climate conference that kicks off November 30 in Dubai, where national negotiators will haggle over the standards for a UN-run global carbon trading market. ![]() But many corporations and nations alike continue to bank heavily on the promise of offsets. Recent data shows that demand for offsets is falling, as are prices for future contracts, a commitment to buy offsets at a set price at a later date, as some companies rethink their reliance on them. But a mounting body of studies and investigative reports has found that these projects can dramatically exaggerate the climate benefits in a variety of ways, often amounting to little more than greenwashing. The basic promise of offsets is that individuals or organizations can balance out their own greenhouse gas pollution by paying others to grow trees, halt logging, or take other steps that may reduce emissions or pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. ![]() And the fact that it has taken such a strong stance on offsets marks another blow to battered carbon markets. Its commitment to replacing natural gas plants and other polluting infrastructure across the state highlights a model that other universities, organizations, and even cities could and should follow, says Holly Buck, an environmental social scientist at the University at Buffalo. The University of California is a huge and influential public research system encompassing three national labs and 10 campuses, including UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and UCLA. On November 30, they will launch a website highlighting the array of problems they found, the strict standards they helped set for UC’s offset purchases, and the methods they developed for scrutinizing projects in voluntary carbon markets. Now the researchers are sharing the lessons they learned over the course of the project, in the hopes of helping other universities and organizations consider what role, if any, offsets should play in sustainability strategies, MIT Technology Review can report. ![]() Soon after Jim Reeves hit number one with Miller’s Billy Bayou, and Ernest Tubb, Faron Young and George Jones all successfully recorded his songs. He was signed as a songwriter for Tree Music Publishing and Ray Price had a 1958 hit with Invitation To The Blues. He spent a year as a bellhop at a Nashville hotel and began to get some of his songs recorded. When he completed his hitch in the military, Roger moved to Nashville in the mid-1950s and began the slow and painful process of learning the craft and business of writing songs. He spent three years in the US army in Korea. Soon, he was able to play not only guitar and fiddle, but also piano, banjo, and drums. Throughout his adolesence, he played music in addition to working the ranch. Influenced by the singing of Hank Williams as well as his brother-in-law, Sheb Wooley, by the time he was ten, he had earned enough money picking cotton to buy himself a guitar. Though born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 2, 1936, shortly after his father died, when he was still a toddler, he was sent to relatives by his ailing mother and was raised by an aunt and uncle in the small farming community of Erick, Oklahoma. Though he had written scores of these sad-tinged country ballads, he rapidly became known to the public as a wacky guy with a guitar who sang funny songs and made weird noises. These included such classics as Billy Bayou, Big Harlan Taylor, Half A Mind, Swiss Maid and Invitation To The Blues. Something of a prolific songwriter, Miller had written more than 150 songs for such singers as George Jones, Ray Price, Ernest Tubb and Jim Reeves before he made a breakthrough as a singer in his own right. Incredibly that was only a warm-up for what he would do the following year, when he swept the board with another six awards, including Best Rock-and-Roll Male Vocal Performance. In 1964 Miller dominated the country music category in the Grammy Awards, walking off with five awards including Best Country Song and Best Country and Western Male Vocal Performance. In the mid 1960s, while most of America was getting caught up in rock’s British invasion, the Nashville-based singer-songwriter was dominating the pop and country charts with Dang Me, Chug-A-Lug, (And You Had A) Do-Wacka-Do, Engine Engine No.9, One Dyin’ And A Buryin’, Kansas City Star, England Swings, Husbands And Wives, Walkin’ In The Sunshine and Little Green Apples. The song has since been covered by nearly 300 artists in all styles of music from jazz through reggae to soul, country and rock. Miller wrote the jazz-influenced tune in 1964, and when released as a single in March 1965, it sold over 500,000 copies in its first two weeks and subsequently chalked up world wide sales in excess of five million. ![]() Its appeal, like all classic songs, is cross generational. The Roger Miller Museum in his home town of Erick, Oklahoma, is a tribute to Miller.Roger Miller’s King Of The Road, is one of the few songs that transcend the boundaries of time and culture. His songs continued to be recorded by younger artists, with covers of "Tall, Tall Trees" by Alan Jackson and "Husbands and Wives" by Brooks & Dunn, each reaching the number one spot on country charts in the 1990s. Later in his life, he wrote the music and lyrics for the 1985 Tony-award winning Broadway musical Big River, in which he acted.Miller died from lung cancer in 1992, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame three years later. He also wrote and performed several of the songs for the 1973 Disney animated film Robin Hood. He later began a recording career and reached the peak of his fame in the mid-1960s, continuing to record and tour into the 1990s, charting his final top 20 country hit "Old Friends" with Willie Nelson in 1982. His most recognized tunes included the chart-topping country/pop hits "King of the Road", "Dang Me", and "England Swings", all from the mid-1960s Nashville sound era. After growing up in Oklahoma and serving in the United States Army, Miller began his musical career as a songwriter in the late 1950s, penning such hits as "Billy Bayou" and "Home" for Jim Reeves and "Invitation to the Blues" for Ray Price. (Janu– October 25, 1992) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actor, best known for his honky-tonk-influenced novelty songs. ![]() You can also show the hover information at the current cursor position with the ⌘K ⌘I (Windows, Linux Ctrl+K Ctrl+I) keyboard shortcut. ![]() But, let's be honest :- the first film was great, the second a bit less. I know a lot of people loved Jolie portraying Lara. I can't help but wonder hod that'd have turned out.Īnyway, that's just me, and that's not the question here. I think I remember reading that at one point Lauren Cohan was in talks for Survivor Lara for the 2018 movie. Now, both are amazing actresses, Oscar winners and trained hard for the role, and that's commendable, as they both did their best, and I am very happy they did. I don't know what it is with Vikander, I just didn't believe it. While both sets of films aren't all that good, as usual with games adapted into film, the character itself was done better by Jolie. My personal take is think Angelina Jolie was the perfect Lara for that particular time and Tomb Raider games, and represented Original Timeline Lara accurately.Īlicia Vikander I think didn't capture the essence of Survivor Lara too well and was a poor casting choice, physically and technically.
